SHIELD OF FAITH
“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.” -Ephesians 6:10-18
It has been a full generation since Price Avasthor united the kingdoms and conquered the Dwarven strongholds with his elite vanguard, the Black Guild. Since then, the Dwarves have been driven out, their technology smashed, and any found supporting them were killed. Dwarves were driven in droves to mining colonies, but we all knew the truth: The Dwarves are no more.
Teaching others to love and pray for our enemies, many of the Disciples sat by and watched the Mad King, as Avasthor came to be known, as he killed even women and children. Laws and their punishments became more severe. We should have known that he would come after the Disciples next.
First he established his Black Guild by slowly seducing and corrupting any Paladins whose sinful natures he could appeal to. These corrupt paladins quickly destroyed their own order from the inside out. Avasthor made them his own apostles. Many of them have died in his name multiple times over, and as a result most of the Guild are now undead. They are lead by his hulking flesh golem, Dorlader.
The Disciples had always opposed Avasthor, who claimed that each man had a right to create divinity within himself. Avasthor's sorcerous ways drew many of the power hungry to him, eager to learn magic. When any Disciples became bold enough to publicly oppose the Mad King, his genocide, tyranny, black magic, and the like, they were not only killed, but publicly tortured and humiliated. Many with weak or casual faith turned away in fear and self-preservation.
Now it seems that the true Disciples, as well as their champions the Paladins, have gone the way of the dwarf. Avasthor would have us believe that he had not eradicated the faith, and his puppet priests barely crack open the Sacred Writ, unless it is to fuel unrest or propaganda to the weak-minded. Most intelligent and free thinking citizens now prefer not to choose, hoping that will be enough.
The Mad King conquers more territory every year, but a small group of rebels have started to disrupt his plans. Rumor has it that Princess Elspeth of Tyre Brenan, recently conquered by the Mad King, has assembled this group herself. Could these be the Paladins, regrouping and retaliating, or is it just another corrupt government waiting for its chance?
SHIELD OF FAITH is a low-magic fantasy setting loosely based on LOTR and Star Wars, set somewhere near Middle Zealand. It has Heavy Christian Overtones and is not in any way associates with the Pope or Michelle Bachmann.
