1. Study your character. Once you have decided the canon character you will play, do some research on that character. Make sure you check our timeline and familiarize yourself with what is and what isn't as it pertains to that character in our RPG.
2. Play to your character's alignment. Carefully decide your canon character's alignment, using our moral alignment guide. If you have trouble deciding, get a moderator or administrator to help you. Once you decide this alignment, refer to it often. Playing to your character's alignment will make play more believable and interesting.
3. Use Character Flaws and Quirks to your advantage. Find out about all the little quirky things that makes your character interesting and include them in your posts as often as possible. If your character speaks with an accent (Gambit, Rogue, Colossus, Nightcrawler), make sure to include that whenever he or she speaks. If your character uses certain phrases frequently (Oh my stars and garters!, Bub, etc.), make sure you use them frequently in your posts... but not so much that it's impossible to read.
4. Don't try to make big changes to your character. The reason X-men is so popular is because people generally like them the way they are written. Don't try to change your character's personality or interests. If you're playing a typically introverted character, don't make them an extrovert. If you are playing a less intelligent character, don't try to make them smart.
